a walk

in the

FOREST

“I often doubt myself. I constantly worry if I’m on the right track. ‘Is this the right thing to do? Which way, which way?’ my mind says. I catch myself fantasizing that the next accomplishment will bring me peace from this stream of thoughts. As you can imagine, this is quite exhausting. For this series, I have spent a lot of time in nature, looking at trees. I noticed how they are all so different. They have different forms, different leaves, different colours. I have seen trees with branches taller than their trunks, trees that split into six different trees, or trees of which the branches cut through each other. During this study I was in awe of everything I saw. I noticed that in nature, everything is exactly what it is. There is no hiding away or doubting itself, no trying to force a different moment. It comes without labels about what is good or bad. It just is. Nature, in that sense, is free. Noticing this gave me a sense of freedom too. Being with what is, instead of trying to change my thoughts. It gave me the opportunity to meet what is alive inside of me and trust myself to feel it. Tiredness, anger, grief. But also immense joy and intimate love. The tree is free in her form, so why shouldn’t we?
